The twelfth-century poet Kamban was reputedly a scholar of Sanskrit and Tamil. His retelling of the life of Rama, known as Ramavataram or Kamba Ramayanam, is a significant and much loved text of Tamil literature. Kamban is said to have been crowned the ‘king of poets’ by the emperor Rajendra Chola.
