Ashutosh Varshney is Professor of Political Science, Brown University. Born in India and educated at Allahabad University and JNU, he received his PhD from MIT and taught at Harvard University and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, before joining Brown. His books include Ethnic Conflict and Civic Life: Hindus and Muslims in India (Yale University Press, 2002) and Democracy, Development and the Countryside: Urban-Rural Struggles in India (Cambridge University Press, 1995). He has won the Guggenheim and Carnegie awards for his research. He served on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Task Force on Millennium Development Goals (2002-5) and on the Council on Foreign Relations /Asia Society Task Force on American foreign policy towards South Asia (2001-2).
