His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. Born to a peasant family in Taktser, northeastern Tibet, on 6 July 1935 and named Lhamo Dhondup, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama at the age of two. He began his monastic education at the age of six and at twenty-three was awarded the Geshe Lharampa degree, equivalent to a doctorate of Buddhist philosophy.
In 1950 His Holiness the Dalai Lama was called upon to assume full political power as the ruler of Tibet after China’s invasion of Tibet. In 1959 he was forced to escape into exile in India. Since then he has lived in Dharamsala, the seat of the Central Tibetan Administration in Exile.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama is one of the most influential spiritual leaders in the world. He has consistently advocated policies on non-violence, even in the face of extreme aggression. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet.
